Introduction to our Education Programs

The Black Dog Institute provides specialised education and training programs for GPs and GP registrars throughout NSW that focus on the identification, treatment and management of depression and bipolar disorder in the general population. Programs are delivered free of charge to GPs and GP registrars in New South Wales.

Our training programs have been developed from material based on over 18 years of clinical and research experience at the Black Dog Institute (formerly the Mood Disorders Unit), and in collaboration with general practitioners, the NSW Alliance of General Practice Divisions, the College of Psychological Medicine, the NSW Department of Health and the Commonwealth Government. All GP programs are developed by Black Dog Institute clinicians and are independent of input or support from pharmaceutical companies.

The programs are accredited by the RACGP and ACRRM and attract Category 1 and Category 2 CPD points.  The programs adhere to mental health training standards set by the GPMHSC, for both Mental Health Skills Training and Focused Psychological Strategies. For further information about these standards, please visit the RACGP website.

Our Team of Facilitators

Our workshops are delivered by a team of facilitators made up both psychiatrists and GPs with specialised training in mental health.  The Institute is recruiting a number of mental health professionals to assist in facilitating programs. If you are an experienced mental health professional and have an interest in facilitating our programs, please contact the General Practice Education Project Officer for further details.
