The Institute offers GPs a selection of interactive workshops focused on various aspects of recognising and managing depression and bipolar disorder in a general practice setting. These workshops provide both theoretical and practical resources for application in the assessment and treatment of mood disorders. Individual course descriptions detail the learning objectives and the accreditation levels for each workshop.
Our 6-hour workshops are accredited by the RACGP as a Category 1 ALM (Active Learning Module) qualifying for 40 QA&CPD points and 7 ACCRM points for the 2008-2010 triennium. All 6-hr workshops meet the accreditation criteria of the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) for Mental Health Skills Training (MHST), formerly Level 1 initial.
These modules may be taken individually or in combination to form a 6-hr ALM (Active Learning Module). Individual course descriptions detail the learning objectives and the accreditation levels for each workshop.
If seeking award of Category 1 CPD points (40 points), GPs may choose two of the seven modules below to constitute an ALM of at least six hours. GPs must advise the Institute of their intention to complete a second module at the time of registration. GPs may also choose to complete only one of these modules to attract RACGP Category 2 CPD points.
Modules 6 & 7 are also accredited as Focused Psychological Strategies CPD (FPS CPD), formerly Level 2 ongoing. All of the Mood Disorder Management Modules are approved for Mental Health CPD, formerly Level 1 ongoing.
This 6-hour program aims to teach GPs key CBT-based interventions applicable to treating patients presenting with non-melancholic depressions. It will cover the overall treatment process (assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, etc); an introduction to psychological treatments and especially CBT; learning key CBT skills useful in addressing the issues of patients presenting with depression specifically anxiety and negative thinking (basic cognitive challenging); and will include consumer and carer perspectives.
Provides Cat 1 40 QA&CPD and FPS CPD
This 20-hour CBT program was developed by the Institute to provide GPs with CBT training accredited as FPS Skills Training. The course is comprised of a series of face-to-face workshops, in addition to a self-directed component.
The course addresses the following topics:
Completion of the full program qualifies GPs to register with GPMHSC as providers of FPS (formerly Level 2 initial).
This 2-hour workshop is aimed at general practitioners, psychologists and other health professionals. It aims to assist participants in using exercise as a strategy to manage depression. The workshop is co-facilitated by an accredited exercise physiologist and focuses on strategies to encourage physical activity in depressed patients.
Forums are occasionally offered on specific special interest topics, such as perinatal mood disorders. These are presented by an expert on the topic and chaired by a GP and held at the Institute in Randwick. Information on upcoming forums will be posted on our COURSE DATES & REGISTRATION page.
GPs and GP registrars now have an opportunity to sit in on patient consultations. Participating GPs are exposed to the way in which the Institute’s consultant psychiatrists utilise a sub-typing model of depression, to assess and manage the depressive and bipolar disorders, particularly treatment resistant conditions.
