‘Reconceptualising Mood Disorders: A Practical Approach’

The Black Dog Institute is pleased to offer this 6-hr workshop for Nurses and Allied Health Professionals. The program focuses on the identification, treatment and management of mood disorders (particularly the depressive and bipolar disorders) and aims to empower nurses with a clearer understanding of the depression subtypes and treatment approaches. This workshop is provided free of charge and is endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing Australia.

Program Outline

The workshop covers the following topics:

Topic 1 - The Diagnosis of Mood Disorders Covers current conceptualisations of the mood disorders and presents new information based on current research findings.

Topic 2 – Recognising Biologically-weighted Mood Disorders Instructs participants in specific symptoms and behaviours which characterise those mood disorders with a predominant biologically-based aetiology

Topic 3 – The Role of Stress and Personality Styles in Non-melancholic Depression Examines the role of stress and personality styles in the development and maintenance of non-melancholic depression

Topic 4 – The Neurobiological Basis for Mood Disorders Explores the psychological and medical management of mood disorders and treatment recommendations

Learning Outcomes

By the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the classification of mood disorders with reference to current research evidence
  • Recognise the key symptoms associated with the more biologically-weighted mood disorders
  • Understand how stress and personality style interact in the development and maintenance of mood disorders
  • Understand the role of psychological interventions and the relevance of medication in mood disorders

Cost  

The program is funded by the NSW Department of Health and at this stage there is no cost to participants within New South Wales.

Various locations throughout New South Wales by request. 

How to access a program

Our workshops are delivered by request, for a minimum of 10 participants.  If you are interested in a workshop, please speak to your local Education Coordinator about organising and hosting a workshop in your area.  If you are interested in organising and hosting a workshop yourself, please contact Katherine Dabich (details below). 

We will provide workshop materials and a facilitator at no cost.
