School counsellors

The Black Dog Institute's Education Program for School Counsellors is designed to reinforce and refine the information presented in previous depression education programs based on current developments in research and clinical practice.

The Workshop

Bumps in the Road: Recognising and Diagnosing Mood Disorders in Young People (6 hours)

This workshop will present new information based on the advances in the diagnosis of mood disorders and introduce the Black Dog Institute Model of Mood Disorders. Case studies, group activities and discussions allow practical application of the information presented in the workshop.  The workshop covers the following topics:

  • The Diagnosis of Mood Disorders presents new information based on current advances in the diagnosis of mood disorders. The aim is to empower counsellors and clinicians with a greater appreciation of the complexities of the depression subtypes and a clearer understanding of treatment approaches. Participants are encouraged to re-examine their own practices in the diagnosis and treatment of depressed youngsters.
  • The Impact of Stress and Personality Styles in Non-melancholic Depression aims to provide participants with an understanding of the contributions of stress and personality styles to the development of non-melancholic depression. It also addresses clinical skills in recognising and managing the different clinical presentations of non-melancholic depression in youngsters.
  • Bipolar Disorder in Young People introduces participants to the current understanding of Bipolar Disorder in children and adolescents.  It aims to assist counsellors and clinicians in recognising differences between Bipolar Disorder and other conditions.
  • The Role of Medication and Psychological Treatments is designed to educate school counsellors and clinicians about the range of medications used in the treatment and management of mood disorders in adolescents. It also aims to help participants understand differing medications' mode of action, side-effect profiles and possible drug-drug interactions.
