The Black Dog Institute is proud to offer the INSIGHT schools program to secondary students throughout NSW. The INSIGHT program raises mental health awareness, offers accurate information about mental health issues, dispels the stigma associated with mental illness and encourages early help seeking.
The programs are presented by people who have experience with a mental illness and carers of people who are mentally ill. Their personal stories give a richness and depth to the program that is unique in mental health education. Hearing the presenters’ first hand experiences, which are incorporated throughout the presentation, helps students to better understand some complex issues. At the same time, the presenters are inspiring role models of surviving and managing the impact of mental illness.
One student who participated in an INSIGHT presentation said, “I have gained courage to speak to someone about my problems.” Another student said, “We have mental illness in our family… I now feel encouraged to talk about some issues at home.”
The INSIGHT program has been presented at schools around NSW and over 3000 students have participated in programs in 2007 alone.
