GPs and GP registrars have the opportunity to observe a comprehensive clinical assessment interview with a patient attending the Black Dog Institute's Depression Clinic, and sit in on the ensuing case discussion and treatment planning with Black Dog Institute psychiatrists. GPs will be exposed to the application of a sub-typing model of depression, with emphasis on categorical subtypes (non-melancholic, melancholic and psychotic depression) to assess and manage the depressive and bipolar disorders, and particularly early onset and treatment-resistant conditions.

The Clinic Orientation Program involves a three-step process:

• Familiarisation with detailed mood assessment via the computer-based Mood Assessment Program (the MAP)
• Attending a patient consultation with a psychiatrist
• Attending case management meetings with a senior clinician to discuss diagnoses and treatment options.

The Program is accredited by the RACGP as a Category 2 activity. NSW-based GPs and GP Registrars are invited to participate in the program. The Clinic Orientation Program will be conducted during office hours at the Institute’s facilities in Randwick, NSW [PDF, 45KB] . Once a suitable time and the patient's consent is given, Black Dog Institute staff will contact you to arrange a suitable time to participate in the program.
