20-hour Program

  1. The ABC of CBT: Skills for GPs. Course description [PDF, 329KB]

This 20-hour program provides the GP with the knowledge and skills to use CBT effectively for a variety of clinical conditions. Together with teaching practical CBT strategies, the program specifically addresses the delivery of psychological services within the context of general practice.

The program consists of 18-hours of face to face, interactive learning together with 2 hours of self-directed learning which is debriefed within the modules.

By the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the principles of CBT
  • Perform an initial assessment, formulation and treatment plan for patients with anxiety and depression
  • Identify patients who are suitable candidates for CBT and those whose conditions necessitate the prioritisation of other treatments
  • Delineate the physiological, cognitive and behavioural basis of anxiety, worry, panic and anger
  • Use a range of cognitive and behavioural strategies to assist patients with depression and anxiety

Completion of the full program qualifies GPs to register with GPMHSC as providers of FPS (formerly Level 2 initial).

Special Interest Forums in Mood Disorders

Forums are occasionally offered on specific special interest topics, such as perinatal mood disorders.  These are presented by an expert on the topic and chaired by a GP and held at the Institute in Randwick.  Information on upcoming forums will be posted on our COURSE DATES & REGISTRATION page.

Clinical Attachment: Visit our clinic

GPs and GP registrars now have an opportunity to sit in on patient consultations.   Participating GPs are exposed to the way in which the Institute’s consultant psychiatrists utilise a sub-typing model of depression, to assess and manage the depressive and bipolar disorders, particularly treatment resistant conditions.
