Professionally trained presenters with first hand experience to help students to better understand mental illness.

The Black Dog Institute offers a range of specialised programs for professionals working with young people (School Counsellors, Psychologists, Social Workers and Other Clinicians Working with Young People). Each presentation and workshop is delivered by an experienced clinical psychologist. Programs are scheduled on site at the Black Dog Institute in Randwick, and can also be delivered offsite (on a request basis).

Bumps in the Road: Recognising and Diagnosing Mood Disorders (6-hr)

This workshop presents advances in the diagnosis of mood disorders (unipolar depression and bipolar disorder) and introduces the Black Dog Institute subtyping model. The aim of this workshop is to empower clinicians with a greater appreciation of the complexities of the depression subtypes, the impact of stress and personality styles and a clearer understanding of both medical and psychological treatments. The workshop also provides practical strategies for relapse prevention and resilience building. Case studies, group activities and discussions allow practical application of the information presented in the workshop.

Practical Resilience Building Strategies for Young People (3-hr)

The aim of this workshop is to provide information about the key areas for building resilience in young people and to introduce clinicians to concepts of strengths based counselling techniques that can be used with this population. Suggested strategies are considered with reference to individual case formulation taking into account features of temperament and personality style.

Managing Bipolar Disorder in Young People (3-hr)

This workshop focuses on understanding how bipolar disorder presents in young people and how to assess and manage the disorder as a member of the treatment team. Developmental differences in symptom presentation, issues of comorbidity as well as risk assessment and management for young people with bipolar disorder will be discussed. This workshop also instructs psychologists to work with clients to recognise their early warning signs and to focus on relapse prevention strategies as part of their Wellbeing Plan. It combines didactic instruction with small group exercises and discussion.

Tackling Teenage Depression (3-hr)

This workshop, based on the book "Navigating Teenage Depression" by Professor Gordon Parker and Ms Kerrie Eyers, addresses signs and symptoms of mood disorders in teenagers. It also examines some of the common causes of teenage depression and obstacles to seeking appropriate help. Using a workshop format with small group discussions, participants are encouraged to consider their own experiences in dealing with depression in young people.

Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents (3-hr)

This workshop provides an overview of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. It focuses on the symptoms, causes and various treatments of anxiety disorders as well as the impact of the school environment on young people with these disorders.
