The full-day workshops are aimed at mental health professionals who have a familiarity with, or strong interest in the mood disorders. Ideally participants should currently work with clients with mood disorders. These workshops will provide participants with a solid foundation in the recognition and management of mood disorders.

New Perspectives in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Mood Disorders

Addressing Non-melancholic Depression in the Anxious Worrier and the Perfectionist 

This workshop is designed to assist psychologists, counsellors and mental health professionals who are managing clients with ‘anxious worrying’ personality styles or personality styles which comprise high levels of ‘perfectionism’. Participants are provided with a clearer understanding of the typical symptom pattern and illness course, recognition of how personality characteristics shapes the symptom pattern for non-melancholic depression and provided with specific strategies for developing psychological treatments and building resilience.

The Role of Medication in the Management of Mood Disorders

Perinatal in Practice

This workshop aims to introduce psychologists, GPs, counsellors and mental health professionals to the current understanding of perinatal mood disorders and their management, using lecture, case studies and interactive exercises. It explores the diagnosis of perinatal mood disorders and the common psychosocial stressors affecting new parents, introduces screening tools used to identify women at risk in the perinatal period, and assesses the impact of perinatal mood disorders for the mother, her baby and her partner. The workshop will also cover the risk benefit approach to the use of antidepressant medication in the perinatal period and how to develop a comprehensive management plan for women with a perinatal mood disorder.

Treating Bipolar Disorder from a Psychological Perspective

This workshop covers diagnostic and management issues with particular reference to differences between bipolar I and bipolar II disorders.  It also presents information about medications used in the treatment of acute episodes as well as issues relevant to long-term management. The seminar provides practical skills on psychological strategies including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal and Social Rhythms Therapy and the development of wellbeing plans to facilitate recovery and  to prevent relapse in bipolar disorder.

Building Resilience to Mood Disorders: Risk Reduction, Relapse Prevention and Maintenance Strategies

This workshop provides specialised skills for clinicians working with patients with mood disorders over the long-term.  The workshop examines three key areas relevant to long-term management including risk reduction - within the context of lifestyle modification, stress management and interpersonal skills training, relapse prevention - with a particular focus on the detection and management of early warning signs and planning for building resilience in depression and bipolar disorder.  Participants will also be encouraged to consider factors related to risk and recovery within the wider social context for patients with mood disorders.
