Findings from the Mood Swings Survey

First, may we say 'Thank you' to all who took part in our Mood Swings Survey, which was on our website between March and October 2004. We were very pleased with the number of responses to the Survey - over 900 in total - allowing us to gather some valuable insights into the nature of the 'highs' experienced by people with mood swings. One of the aims of the survey was to define the key features of 'highs' (also known as mania and hypomania) in those with Bipolar Disorder.

The data from the Mood Swings Survey has allowed us to identify 6 key features of mania and hypomania.

These features are: (1) increased energy; (2) positive mood; (3) irritability; (4) inappropriate behaviour; (5) creativity; and (6) mystical experiences.

We also learned that, of these 6 features, the most significant one was increased energy. This finding is in contrast to the commonly held view that mania and hypomania are predominantly characterised by a positive mood.

Most importantly, the data from the survey has assisted us in developing a screening measure for Bipolar Disorder. This screening measure is now accessible on our website.

Thank you once again for taking the time to complete this survey and helping us to increase our understanding of Bipolar Disorder. Your input into our research is invaluable.
