The INSIGHT program at the Black Dog Institute, delivers mental health awareness programs to secondary students throughout NSW. It offers accurate information about mental health issues, dispels the stigma associated with mental illness and encourages early help seeking. The programs are presented by people who have experience with a mental illness and carers of people who are mentally ill. Their personal stories give a richness and depth to the program that is unique in mental health education. Hearing the presenters’ first hand experiences, which are incorporated throughout the presentation, helps students to better understand some complex issues. At the same time, the presenters are inspiring role models of surviving and managing the impact of mental illness.

The Black Dog Institute’s Rural Ambassador Program was launched in 2007 in response to the increasing need to address the issue of mood disorders in rural NSW. Our Ambassadors have been chosen and trained by the Institute to deliver presentations to rural and remote communities, providing information on mood disorders including types, symptoms and getting help.
There are currently 9 Ambassadors, with plans in place to recruit more volunteers in 2008. Each Ambassador has personal experience of a mood disorder, either as a carer or consumer.
Our Ambassadors are located in various areas around NSW, covering areas in the Central West, Hunter/New England, North Cost, Illawarra and South Coast.
Within each presentation, our Ambassadors share their own experience of living with or caring for someone with a mood disorder. Through this lived experience education we hope to raise awareness and destigmatise mood disorders as well as encourage early help seeking amongst our audiences. Ambassadors speak at a diverse range of events from small support groups to large public forums.
